Campaign to Preserve Ultra-Rare Arcade Games

Total $US Pledged So Far :  $ 10,250 (US Dollars)
Number of Pledges So Far : 64
Average $US per Pledge :  $          160 (US Dollars)

Valid at :   08-Aug-2002,  02:59 AM

Overview :   Please Do NOT Send ANY Money yet  (See below)

This campaign aims to gather donations (pledges only at the moment) from the emulation community in order
to eventually purchase the rights to some extremely rare arcade games.

N.B.  Originally, this campaign aimed to purchase the actual physical ultra-rare arcade machines
(Military Battlezone (Bradley Trainer) and Marble Madness 2 (Marble Man) of which only 2 or 3 were ever built).
However, these machines are no longer for sale, so the campaign has been changed to attempt to purchase the rights
to the games direct from the copy right holder (Midway).

This is a very delicate process, and I am now in the process of tracking down the right people to talk to
and write to at Midway (the company that own the rights to the games).

N.B. Please do not contact Midway about this - this must be done *very* carefully.
We don't want the price going up, or Midway getting pissed off at us !!!

N.B.  This process may take several weeks, or even longer, and I certainly don't want to rush things and stuff
things up.  I also want to give things time to calm down and reduce the heat caused by the removal from
sale of the above machines.

These physical arcade machines that contain these games are very old, extremely rare, and they may
not be around much longer due to the ravages of Bit Rot, ROM Decay, and general mechanical and
electrical wear and tear.  The ONLY way to ensure the games these machines contain are not lost
forever is to get the games (ROM images) emulated.

The sole aim of purchasing the rights to these games is to simply make the
games Public Domain, so that the games can be preserved through emulation.
In doing so, the entire emulation community can enjoy the games without fear or guilt.

As an arcade machine / emulator enthusiast, I am determined to try and preserve these games.

If you would like to contribute to or support this campaign and make a contribution pledge, then please do so,
but first ensure that you understand the following criteria  / rules :
1 Do NOT send me money or cash or checks under ANY circumstances (see below).
2 Email me (moose@rocknet.net.au) with a brief email, putting your name, and the amount in $US that
you wish to contribute in the email's subject.  e.g.  An email subject "Mike Smith, $20" would be fine.
3 Remember: All amounts should be quoted in US Dollars.
4 If you would like to contribute towards only one of the machines, then please specify this in your email.
e.g.  An email subject "Mike Smith, $20, MM2" would $20 US pledge towards Marble Madness 2.
5 When enough money has been raised, you will be contacted via email and asked to send the money you
have pledged to someone (who is still to be determined) who is based in the USA, and will collect the
money, and conduct the purchase of the rights to the games.
6 Then, the ROMs for the games will be obtained, and, if possible, a new screen or message
will be added into them to say that these games are Public Domain as a result of this campaign,
so that this message is displayed when any game or emulator runs / loads the roms.
7 Then, the ROMs will be released to the Public Domain and released over the internet.

In the future, I would like to automate the process of collecting pledges on this WEB page.
My home page is currently based on XOOM servers, so if anyone can help with this with CGI or whatever scripts, contact me.

If you can help with any aspects of this campaign, please let me know.
If you can help spread word of this campaign to increase its chance for pledges / donnations, please do so.
If you want to change your pledges, or pledge details, please let me know.

Please visit my main page for further details, links, information, and updates on the campaign : http://move.to/moose

11-Oct-00 Campaign started by Michael O'Malley by posting a (long) post on both MAME Message Boards.
11-Oct-00 Email sent to JoseQ at JoseQ's EmuViews (http://www.emuviews.com/) about campaign (but received absolutely No response)
11-Oct-00 Email sent to Dave at Vintage Gaming (http://www.vg-network.com/) about campaign (but received absolutely No response)
14-Jan-01 Campaign Updated by my (long) post on MAME Message Board.
14-Jan-01 Campaign finally mentioned on a WEB site, thanks Retrogames (http://www.retrogames.com).
16-Jan-01 Campaign Updated again by another of my (long) posts on MAME Message Board.
22-Jan-01 Email the owner of the machines, and confirm this campaign's serious intent to purchase the machines, and request further details on the machines.
23-Jan-01 We now have $10,000 US in pledges !!!
24-Jan-01 Comfirmation received direct from the owner that the machines are NO LONGER FOR SALE.
25-Jan-01 Change the campaign to purchase the rights to the games rather than the physical arcade machines.
21-Feb-01 Campaign Updated by my (long) post on my WEB site's main updates section.
15-Nov-01 Campaign Updated again by another my post on MAME Message Board and my WEB site's main updates section.
17-Jan-02 MAME now supports Military Battlezone (Bradley Trainer) - and the ROMs may soon be released to the public.  This is worrying and may undo months of hard work ...

Who the Hell is this "Moose" Guy ???

My name is Michael O'Malley (moose@move.NOSPAM.to.SPAMMENOT),  and I live in Australia.   I have been into emulation for many
years, and particularly into Arcade Machine Emulators since the very first arcade emulators appeared on the PC.
I know many of the arcade emulator authors, and I have many contacts and friends in the emulation community.

I am a professional computer programmer, but I do not have the necessary low level chip or electrical knowledge
to enable me to write an emulator completely.  So, rather than being just another freeloader in the emulation community,
I have dedicated my WEB pages to helping emulation / authors, and have also developed FREE emulation utilities.
Now, I am trying to ensure that some very old and ultra-rare arcade machines are preserved through emulation.

I started this campaign on 11-October-2000, by posting messages to the MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator)
Message Boards (at: http://www.mame.net/ ).

My main role in the campaign (at this stage) is to get the campaign started (no easy task, I can tell you), push the campaign along
(again, no easy task), collate and report the pledges, and monitor how things are going until we have enough money to really act.

Because I am in Australia, and the machines are in the USA, then there is a good chance that I will NEVER EVER see
or touch the legendary machines that I am working so hard to preserve, but who knows, one day I may ….
And, what a wonderful day that would be !!  ;))

But, hopefully, we will all see these games safely preserved through emulation soon !  :)
