Computer Game Review : Super Off Road

Super Off Road was (is !) another classic Arcade Game !

Super Off Road enabled you to drive a souped up 4WD vehicle on a whole range of tracks against 4 opponents : 2 or 3 friends and the rest computer controlled.

When playing, you look down on your little vehicle and control it around the courses while picking the best route to avoid water, pot holes, barricades, and other hazards, while at the same time picking up cash and other bonuses.

You can also collide with other cars and force them into barricades and other hazards.

There is also a "turbo" button to enable you to speed up dramatically for a short period to get past your opponents, but beware, because your vehicle will be much harder to control at this speed.

At the end of a race, you visit the Upgrade Shop, where you can buy more nitros (turbos), upgrade your tyres, upgrade your shock absorbers, increase your acceleration, and increase your top speed.

Each upgrade costs money, which you earn by collecting bonuses during the race and by the position you come when finishing a race.

These upgrades have a massive impact on your vehicle's performance.

So, how does Super Off Road for the PC compare with the arcade original ?

Well, I am very pleased to say that the PC game is an excellent conversion.

The graphics, sounds, music, and game play are all identical to the arcade game.

On the PC, you can still have 3 players at once - 2 on the keyboard and 1 on the joystick, and this set-up works very well.

But, even playing it on your own against 3 computer controlled opponents is still a real hoot.

This is one game I have kept on my hard-disk since the day I got it, which is easy to do because the game only takes up a paltry 600 KB of disk space.

All in all, this is an excellent conversion of the original arcade game, and I highly recommend it to fans of the original game, and anyone else who enjoys fast and furious driving games.
